Hartmann Ashram, Izatnagar, Bareilly
(1966, Bareilly Diocese)

In 1964, Most Rev Br Clementinus of Vlissengen, the then Minister General of the Capuchins, came to India to conduct the canonical visitation. In the following year he called a meeting of the Capuchin Superiors in North India for the continuing of Capuchin presence. As a result of the deliberations of this meeting, a Capuchin Friary was built in 1966 at Izatnagar, Bareilly, which was blessed and dedicated to Bishop Anastasius Hartmann. It became a flourishing mission within a few years. In 1967, late Br Berard started the Hartmann school with few students under thatched roofs. The fruit of the hard labour of many a Capuchin is today’s Hartmann College.

A church was built and dedicated to St Lawrence of Brindisi which was later declared into a parish by the late Bishop Conrad de Vito. Today the parish has over 80 families.

Though the friars run a well reputed Hartmann College, they have not neglected to serve the illiterate, the needy and the sick. A literacy programme for the poor illiterate children here had been in existence since 1981. It was made more systematic and regular from 1992 under the name of Pushp Vidyalaya, with c. 250 poor children benefiting from this literacy programme. Capuchins here have also rendered valuable services to the neighbouring leprosy patients since 1975.
